Properties: Sunifiram is a completely new, synthetic compound developed in the early 2000s. It was created quite recently, which is why it drew attention to scientists. For this reason, many research centers are trying to establish how exactly it works. Numerous studies have proven that it has a strong nootropic effect – as it primarily affects the cognitive functions of the human brain. Thanks to supplementation with sunifiram, the absorption of new information becomes easier. Sunifiram stimulates the action of neurotransmitters – glutamate and acetylcholine – which supports the learning process and facilitates information processing.

However, learning would not make much sense if the acquired knowledge was to be quickly forgotten. That is why we also need a good memory. Memory, on the other hand, is largely dependent on acetylcholine. This neurotransmitter is responsible for the level of our concentration and the effectiveness of remembering. Due to the fact that sunifiram increases the activity of acetylcholine, it also improves the functioning of our memory. It also stimulates the brain structures responsible for long-term memory, which is why we remember new information for longer.

Occurrence: Sunifiram does not occur in nature. It is a compound obtained in the laboratory. The first synthesis of this compound was carried out in 2000.

Biochemistry: Sunifiram (DM-235) is an organic chemical compound that belongs to the group of ampakines – compounds that increase the activity of AMPA glutamatergic receptors. It is a derivative of piracetam, but is not included in the racetam group. Structurally it differs from racetams because the 2-pyrrolidone ring – characteristic for this group of compounds – in sunifiram remains open. This compound easily crosses the blood-brain barrier. In the body, it causes an increase in the activity of the main excitatory neurotransmitter – glutamic acid – by affecting the positive allosteric modulator of AMPA receptors. It also contributes to the increased activity of acetylcholine – a stimulating neurotransmitter.

Fun fact: Sunifiram, just like racetams, should be taken in combination with supplements that have a cholinergic effect, e.g. acetyl L-carnitine (ALCAR), CDP-choline or dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE).
