What is ALCAR | Acetyl-L-carnitine?

Properties: ALCAR is a derivative of L-carnitine which is widely used by athletes as the support for muscle performance. It reduces muscle soreness after a demanding workout. Acetyl form of L-carnitine – ALCAR has the broader spectrum of properties and is more easily absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. It significantly increases neuronal activity and it takes part in the production of acetylcholine. Therefore, the energy level is noticeably increased. What is more, ALCAR makes it easier to focus and helps to assimilate new information. Additionally, it protects neuron cells’ mitochondria from oxidative stress. Thus, ALCAR has a beneficial effect on neurons, their number and general condition. Mitochondria, the so-called energy factories of the cells, are exposed and vulnerable to many harmful factors. By improving the detoxification process, ALCAR eliminates excessive toxins and fatty acids from the cells. In addition, it “catches” free radicals. ALCAR helps mitochondria and the whole nervous system to function properly. This way, this complex activity of acetyl-L-carnitine allows us to exercise for a longer period of time and to work out more intensively. Occurrence: ALCAR occurs in the human body naturally and is produced in every cell by mitochondria –  cell energy sources. In order to maintain an appropriate ALCAR level in the body, supplementation is often needed. Its main natural sources are products of animal origin, especially meat: beef, chicken and fish.

Biochemistry: Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) is an organic chemical compound belonging to the group of amino acids. It’s the source of L-carnitine – an amino acid naturally occurring in animal tissues. In comparison to “simple” L-carnitine, ALCAR has higher bioavailability and has a stronger impact on the central nervous system. Its maximal concentration in blood plasma occurs 3 hours after taking it. Additionally, it readily crosses the blood-brain barrier. In the central nervous system, ALCAR is the donor of the acetyl group which is the substrate for acetylcholine, glutamate and GABA production. It also takes part in the production of myelin sheaths as it stimulates creating lipids that surround neurons. After the attachment of acetyl group, ALCAR is converted to carnitine, which is engaged in fatty acid metabolism. ALCAR alone is not responsible for those processes.

Fun fact: Acetyl-L-carnitine is the acetyl ester of L-carnitine that was first discovered in 1905 by Gulewitsch and Krimberg. It was found in the skeletal muscle tissue. That is the reason why  its name originates from the Latin word caro, carnis meaning “meat”. Initially L-carnitine was classified as one of the B vitamins but currently it is considered to be a compound similar to vitamins.

Improves memory and cognitive functions: In the course of many scientific studies scientists have noticed significant correlation between acetyl-L-carnitine supplementation and the uptake of acetylcholine by the nerve cells. It has been proven that this mechanism allows an increased synthesis of acetylcholine – a neurotransmitter responsible for the rate of information processing. What is more, ALCAR stimulates release of dopamine – a hormone that regulates energy and motivation levels. ALCAR also increases the concentration of dopamine receptors. Increases the energy level:  The results of scientific research indicate that acetyl-L-carnitine increases metabolism intensity in the brain tissue by up to 20%, while the glucose intake by nerve cells is elevated by 50%. The biggest changes are observed within the hippocampus and in other brain areas. It has been proven that this amino acid causes a greater release of dopamine and a significant increase in the concentration of receptors for this neurotransmitter. These effects lead to better neuron performance and an increased energy level. Clinical trials proved that ALCAR effectively mitigates symptoms of chronic fatigue like decreased energy level or the lack of motivation. Moreover, this compound is better tolerated than those traditionally used. There was also a limited amount of side effects observed.

Supports the nervous system: ALCAR exerts neuroprotective effect on nerve cells. That has been revealed by both in vitro studies and experiments with animal models. It supports activity of antioxidants naturally occurring in neurons by preventing them from dropping. Thus, it protects nerve cells from the harmful free radicals. ALCAR’s ability to stimulate mitochondria activity in the nerve cells is also important. In addition, acetyl-L-carnitine beneficially affects the condition of cells forming myelin sheaths. Myelin protects and provides nutrients to axons in the central and peripheral nervous systems. ALCAR’s activity improves myelin sheath regeneration after the injury.

Supports physical performance: Acetyl-L-carnitine increases the intensity of metabolism in the body cells, including muscle fibers. It leads to increased muscle efficiency. ALCAR affects the level of cardiolipin – the compound that occurs in heart muscle cells and has an important role in the respiratory chain reactions.
