Coluracetam | Colutropil™

Properties: Coluracetam is a compound from the class or racetams – structurally similar compounds characterized by scientifically proven beneficial impact on cognitive performance. It is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and it stays active for a very long time. Well, at least in comparison with other compounds. Coluracetam stimulates the activity of two important neurotransmitters: glutamate and acetylcholine. The optimal levels of both of them are crucial for efficient information acquisition. By stimulating their production, coluracetam makes learning much easier.

In order to remember newly acquired information the brain needs acetylcholine. Coluracetam increases the concentration of choline – a direct precursor of acetylcholine. Therefore, it improves the formation of memories as well as their recall. 

Where does the name “coluracetam” come from? First meaning is literal – it turns out that prolonged administration of this compound actually increases the acuity of perceived colors. Second meaning is more metaphorical: participants of clinical trials reported significant mood improvements paired with a noticeable drop in anxiety ratings. Hence, we might even conclude that coluracetam adds colors to both our inner world and the one outside.

Occurrence: Similarly to other racetams, coluracetam does not occur in nature. Instead, it is synthesized in laboratory conditions. The first synthesis took place in 2005, in a Japanese pharmaceutical company Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation.

Biochemistry: Coluracetam (BCI-540) is an organic chemical compound classified as a racetam. Like all other racetams, its molecule contains a 2-pirolidon ring that is a derivative of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Coluracetam is an equivalent of piracetam. It is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract quickly. Just 30-60 minutes after administration it reaches maximum concentration in blood plasma. This compound easily crosses the blood-brain barrier. Most importantly, it increases the ratio of neuronal high affinity choline uptake (HACU), which is necessary for secretion of acetylcholine – an excitatory neurotransmitter. As a consequence, the concentration of acetylcholine in the central nervous system is upregulated. Colueracetam can also stimulate AMPA glutaminergic receptors and thereby increase the activity of the main excitatory neurotransmitter of the brain – glutamic acid. The combination of these two features leads to an increased level of serotonin, a neurotransmitter responsible for psychological well-being. Additionally, coluracetam has antidepressant and neuroprotective properties.

Fun fact: Coluracetam has an interesting effect on eyesight. When taken regularly, it can significantly increase the acuity of perceived color and the ability to see different colors.
