Valerian essential oil | Valeriana officinalis

Traditional use: Valerian is an herb that finds a great range of applications in aromatherapy. It is commonly assisted by other herbs such as: lemon balm, hops or rhodiola rosea. Valerian has been used since ancient times and over time it has become an important element of many natural medicine systems. It has repeatedly been mentioned in medical books that were popular at that time. The rumor is that even the father of contemporary medicine – Hippocrates – treated his patients with this herb.

The name “valerian” actually refers to the properties and health benefits provided by the Valeriana officinalis herbs. In Latin “valere” means “to be healthy, be in a good shape”. Indeed, valerian root and its essential oils are also quite popular in natural medicine, particularly because they reduce anxiety. Valerian is a sedative that helps to relax and induces sleep. That makes it an effective remedy for those suffering from insomnia. It also supports proper functioning of the immune system by reducing inflammation and stimulating white blood cells to fight bacteria. Do not forget about the heart, though. After all, it’s quite an important organ… Actually, valerian has a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system too as it regulates blood pressure. It also supports the digestive system by improving metabolism and absorption of nutrients. What is more, valerian might come in handy for people struggling with diarrhea and stomach tension. In cosmetics, valerian oil is used mainly in soaps and perfumes because of its intensive, herbal and woody aroma with a distinctive musky note.

Occurrence: Valerian is a biennial evergreen plant that belongs to the family of Valerianaceae. It is widespread in Europe, North America and Asia where it can be found in humid areas, near the rivers and bogs. The plant reaches up to 2 meters in height and grows gradually. In the first year, it develops feathery leaves just over the ground and in the second year there is a thick steam as well. This herb has distinctive, small flowers gathered in umbels of white color. Flowers have an intensive smell. Usually, the root and rhizome are used as a resource in natural medicine.

Biochemistry: There are many active compounds contained in valerian essential oil but some of them are more significant than the others. The most important substances are: acids (isovaleric, valerenic and acetoxyvalerenic), valarenol and bornyl acetate.

The oil available in our shop is produced with a method of steam distillation from the rhizome of valerian. Thanks to that every drop is optimally condensed and has an aroma bouquet unique for this plant.

Fun fact: Cats love the smell of valerian. This plant affects their behavior similarly to catnip. They might experience slight euphoria and then become calmer.
