Turmeric essential oil | Curcuma longa

Traditional use: Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a spice known for its intensive, yellow color. But it’s not the only thing that makes this herb such a specialty in India. The health-promoting potential of turmeric is probably even more important. Since ages turmeric has been used as a resource in natural medicine but more notably it has also occurred during spiritual ceremonies. The fact is that turmeric is one of the crucial herbs widely used in Indian culture up to this day. However, at first it was used mostly as a dye. It’s possible that because of that some people refer to turmeric as the “Indian saffron”. Over time it has become one of the fundamental herbs used in Ayurveda. This centuries-long natural medicine system has quite a few applications for turmeric. First off, it’s worth mentioning that this herb has strong anti-inflammatory properties that might be of great importance for those struggling with arthritis as well as other bone and joint issues. Others will definitely appreciate its pain-reducing effect combined with the ability to stimulate the immune system in the fight with pathogens. Turmeric essential oil is also commonly used in order to prevent cancer or to treat allergies. In cosmetics, on the other hand, this oil might be applied to rejuvenate the skin and give it a bright look. The aroma of turmeric oil can be described as quite heavy, spicy and earthy with fresh, herbal notes in the background.

Occurrence: Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a perennial plant from the family Zingiberaceae. It grows up to 1 meter above the ground. The part placed underground consists of a thick rhizome and many roots. It naturally occurs in tropical climate regions, specifically Southern Asia. It most likely comes from India where it has become one of the most popular spices and natural medicines. India is also a country of origin for essential oil offered in our shop. In Europe turmeric gained popularity in the Middle Ages thanks to Arab merchants who had traveled and sold this herb.

Biochemistry: Turmeric essential oil contains many active substances, including: ar-turmerone, p-cymene, eucalyptol, curcumen and curlone.

The oil available in our shop is produced with a method of steam distillation from the rhizome of turmeric (Curcuma longa). Thanks to that every drop is optimally condensed and has an aroma bouquet unique for this plant.

Fun fact: In India people apply turmeric paste to the face, legs and hands of a bride right before marriage. This ceremony is called Haldi. Hindu believe that turmeric will help to cleanse the body and spirit before such an important event like marrying a significant one.

How does Turmeric essential oil | Curcuma longa work?

Helps to regulate the immune system: Experts of herbal therapies recommend turmeric essential oil as a remedy for ailments caused by inflammation. The results of modern scientific studies have confirmed its strong anti-inflammatory properties. The active ingredients of this oil are able to relieve inflammation-induced headaches as well as muscle and joint pain – even when it’s caused by arthritis or rheumatism. They can also soothe allergic reactions. In addition, turmeric essential oil inhibits the growth of pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses. Inhalation with this oil may help with improving upper respiratory tract infections since it reduces congestion of the mucous membranes and helps to fight viruses. Scientists are also considering the possibility of using the oil in cancer therapy. This is because current research suggests that it can prevent the proliferation of cancer cells, as well as damage their mitochondria, leading to apoptosis. All in all, turmeric essential oil can definitely be a valuable support for the immune system.

Supports body cleansing: Turmeric is known all over the world for its hepatoprotective properties. Scientific results have proven that the essential oil of this herb contains compounds that protect the liver from the effects of inflammation or certain toxins. After all, the liver is the most important organ in terms of detoxification. This is where potentially harmful substances are metabolized, so the cells and tissues can remain in a good condition. Therefore, taking care of the liver is a major point of efficient body cleansing. It has also been shown that the active ingredients of turmeric oil increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes produced by the liver, including the most potent among them – glutathione. As a result, they indirectly participate in neutralizing free radicals that can be particularly harmful for delicate cell structures. And due to diuretic properties, they promote even more efficient removal of unnecessary substances from the body.

Improves nervous system condition: There are claims that inhalation with turmeric essential oil can be very beneficial for the mind as it improves the ability to focus, but also stabilizes concentration and supports memory. Scientific studies help to identify the mechanisms responsible for this effect. Active substances present in turmeric oil interact with microglia cells, regulating their activity. And that is actually important because when this activity is too high, the cells can pose harm to sensitive brain tissue. Moreover, the biologically active components of turmeric oil stimulate the proliferation of stem cells, from which new nerve cells are formed. They can thus promote brain recovery and development. Researchers are studying the neuroprotective potential of the oil as well as its ability to support regeneration in the treatment of Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s diseases, but also in therapies of strokes and spinal cord injuries.

Supports a good skin condition: Studies indicate that the biologically active ingredients found in turmeric essential oil may bring benefits for the skin. Their antioxidant activity helps to reduce oxidative stress caused by harmful factors such as UV radiation. This contributes to increased vitality of the skin cells and maintaining their proper structure. As a result, turmeric oil reduces the appearance of wrinkles and delays their formation. It has also been proven to counteract discoloration of the skin. Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties are excellent for acne. So even though turmeric oil should be used in small concentrations, it can be a valuable support for the condition and appearance of the skin.
