Geranium oil has an outstanding aroma that is quite similar to the roses. However, there’s more to that. There are also notes of fresh herbs and citrus fruits. The aroma alone makes geranium oil a great choice for aromatherapy or perfumes. The oil can benefit a health condition as well. First off, it supports the immune system in the fight against pathogens and inflammation. Besides that, geranium oil has a good influence on the skin giving it the smoothness of a rose flower.

Geranium essential oil | Pelargonium graveolens

Traditional use: Pelargonium graveolens, a.k.a. geranium, is an herb that will give you more energy and stimulate your senses. Its bright, white and rosy flowers look outstanding and certainly get attention from many professional florists. They are very smooth, delicate and release a pleasant smell. It might be described as a delicate yet quite strong composition of citrus oils, rose and herbs. Geranium oil is a great solution in aromatherapy, but also in cosmetics or as a toning substance.

Traditionally, the oil has been used in order to improve skin condition because when it is taken regularly it helps to regulate natural dermatological processes, e.g. blemishes or a greasy skin. When geranium oil gets in contact with the skin, it has a soothing effect. What is more, antimicrobial properties are important in terms of infections, including bacteria and fungi that exist on the skin. Besides that, geranium oil supports proper blood flow, has anti-inflammatory properties and prevents premature aging of the skin while also reducing cellulite. That is quite a lot of properties that affect the skin in a positive way! Some people prefer to use geranium oil with other oils, e.g. citrus or woody because geranium has such a rich and sweet aroma that it mixes very well.

Occurrence: Pelargonium graveolens is a small, perennial plant belonging to the family Geraniaceae. On average it reaches up to 1 meter in height. At home it can usually be kept for only a few years. It has leaves placed on opposite sides. They are slightly hairy, light green with serrated edges. The most distinctive part of the plant is probably the flower. Flowers are gathered in umbels and usually have many different colors – from white or slightly rosy to strong red. It is the soft and colorful flowers that make geranium such a wonderful presence in gardens. In the largest amounts this plant is cultivated in the Mediterranean Basin but also in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Morocco and Egypt. However, the biggest country that produces geranium is China.

There are many people who choose geranium as a home plant for its smell that is released from the leaves thanks to essential oils. The oil available in our shop is produced from the herbs cultivated on the French Reunion Island that is located on the Indian Ocean.

Biochemistry: The health-promoting properties and powerful aroma of geranium oil are possible thanks to the existence of many active substances. There are compounds such as: citronellol (responsible for an intensive, citrus fragrance), geraniol, caryophyllene oxide, linalool, menthone and geranyl formate.

The oil available in our shop is produced with a method of steam distillation from the leaves of Pelargonium graveolens (geranium). Thanks to that, every drop is optimally condensed and has an aroma bouquet unique for this plant.

Aroma: Middle note of high intensity and medium durability.

Fun fact: Even though geranium flowers are the most distinctive part of this herb, they are not the only part that contains essential oil. It is usually produced from the green parts of the plant that release an aroma after squashing.

How does Geranium essential oil | Pelargonium graveolens work?

Mitigates stress symptoms: Geranium essential oil is considered an excellent “nerve tonic”. According to research studies, this idea has some merit. This is because it has been established that this oil contains active ingredients able to increase the activity of GABA. This brain chemical prevents overstimulation of the nervous system and body as a whole. It is crucial for the ability to cope with difficult situations. The substances found in the oil also affect the activity of the autonomic nervous system. They reduce the excitation of its sympathetic part (which controls fight-or-flight response), while increasing the activity of the parasympathetic part (associated with the state of relaxation). During clinical tests, it has been repeatedly shown that aromatherapy with geranium essential oil may effectively help to relieve stress.

Supports general well-being: The sight of beautiful flowers certainly makes one smile, but that’s not the only way geranium affects mood. The biologically active substances found in its essential oil increase the activity of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. Serotonin is mainly responsible for the feeling of mental comfort. Dopamine is a key element of the properly functioning reward system, the stimulation of which results in the sensation of pleasure. Together with norepinephrine, it determines the level of energy and motivation. The active compounds of geranium oil have also been shown to alleviate pain. This effect is due to their anti-inflammatory properties and the ability to reduce the activity of nerves that conduct pain information. In sum, geranium oil can be beneficial for mood and general well-being.

Supports body cleansing: The liver and kidneys are extremely important to the overall condition of the body. This is because they help to cleanse the body of unnecessary metabolic products and other substances that could damage cells and tissues. Scientific research has shown that geranium essential oil supports their proper functioning. After all, its active ingredients help to remove harmful compounds from the liver and kidneys. They also intensify urination, thus making it easier to dispose of these substances from the organism. In addition, the oil contains ingredients with antioxidant properties. Therefore, it is able to neutralize free radicals, an excess of which is harmful to delicate cell structures, including DNA and mitochondria. All these effects combined provide a solid support for the condition of the body.

Improves skin and hair condition: The enthusiasts of natural therapies use geranium oil as an ingredient in cosmetics. In fact, it is very beneficial for the skin. It stimulates collagen production, thus firming the skin, increasing skin tone and reducing wrinkles. It also promotes skin regeneration and reduces skin imperfections, such as discoloration, scars and signs of irritation. It turns out to be effective in the fight against acne. Its positive influence extends not only to the complexion, but also to the scalp. The active ingredients of this oil improve skin nourishment and stimulate hair growth. SImultaneously, they reduce sebum production, preventing oily hair. Thanks to that, geranium helps to maintain a youthful and attractive appearance.
