Galangal essential oil | Alpinia galanga

Traditional use: Galangal (Alpinia galanga) is an important part of Thai and Vietnamese cuisine. It is used mostly as an additional ingredient in soups because it gives a spicy taste and rich aroma. In Indonesia it is used to prepare “jamu” – a herbal brew that supports general health and helps to maintain good physical strength. In Ayurvedic medicine essential oil from galangal is useful as a natural remedy for the skin giving it a bright, young look, increasing elasticity and regulating its color. What is more, galangal oil exhibits antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties so it can be used as a support during seasonal infections. In South-Eastern Asia it is known as an effective support for joints. Moreover, its toning effects are used in natural medicine to reduce stress. Galangal oil mixed with a carrier oil is a great choice for a relaxing massage. It has a refreshing, spicy and sweet aroma with woody notes that stimulates the senses and creativity. That is why some people prefer to use it as a natural aphrodisiac. And since the oil has quite a strong aroma, it might be added to cosmetics or perfumes. It gives the best results when combined with other spicy oils, such as ginger, pepper or cardamon because the fragrance notes are quite similar in all of them.

Occurrence: Alpinia galanga is a big perennial plant belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, just like a common ginger. It reaches impressive sizes for this type of plant growing up to 2,5 meters in height. It is very similar to the lesser galangal but as the name suggests, Alpinia galanga is a little bigger. The most distinctive part of the plant is a huge rhizome that is actually the resource used to extract essential oils. The leaves have a lanceolate shape and are pretty wide. The inflorescence is built from small panicles with white flowers that have a red labellum (a leaf-like part of the plant with a different color).

Naturally galangal grows in Southern Asia. The herb also occurs in Malaysia, but the biggest crops of this plant are located in China, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Malay Archipelago. The essential oil available in our stock is made from the galangal grown in Indonesia.

Biochemistry: Galangal essential oil contains many active compounds. Some of them include: carotol, 1,8-cineole, fenchol, beta-caryophyllene, limonene, alpha-terpineol and other terpenes.

The oil available in our shop is produced with a method of steam distillation from the rhizome of galangal (Alpinia galanga). Thanks to that every drop is optimally condensed and has an aroma bouquet unique for this plant.

Fun fact: The genus name “alpinia” comes from the name of Prospero Alpini – an Italian botanist who specialized in research on exotic plants. Alpini lived in the 17th century and discovered many new species and types of plants, including galangal.

How does Galangal essential oil | Alpinia galanga work?

Protects the nervous system: In regions where galangal occurs naturally, this plant is treated as a stress reliever and a support for creativity. The results of modern studies have proven that the biologically active compounds present in its essential oil significantly benefit the condition and activity of the central nervous system. They reduce effects of an enzyme that deactivates acetylcholine – a neurotransmitter which is extremely important for concentration, memory and creativity. This allows acetylcholine to have a more pronounced influence on neurons, improving cognitive abilities. Galangal essential oil protects the neurons from excessive accumulation of beta-amyloid and oxidative stress. And since it supports proper blood circulation, it provides them with a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients necessary for efficient functioning.

Supports the immune system: Galangal essential oil supports both the body and mind. Research suggests that it can be a valuable help in the fight against harmful microorganisms attacking our body. It inhibits the growth of different species of bacteria, viruses and fungi. It also strengthens the body’s natural defense mechanisms. This is because the biologically active compounds contained in this oil increase the number of type T lymphocytes. They also increase proliferation of spleen cells. The spleen is an organ that plays a particularly important role in terms of immunity. Besides that, it doesn’t allow excessive spread of inflammation and helps to reduce it when it is no longer needed.

Supports cleansing of the organism: Experts of herbal medicine value galangal for its effect on supporting the vitality of the body. The results of modern research have proven that the active compounds contained in its essential oil help rid the body of many harmful substances. Some of them are powerful antioxidants that are able to neutralize free radicals. In addition to that, galangal oil stimulates natural mechanisms that protect the body from different threats. It intensifies the production of glutathione – one of the most potent endogenous antioxidants. It also supports other liver functions and protects this organ from the effects of certain toxins. What is more, they reduce cholesterol levels and thus can be a valuable support for the prevention of atherosclerosis.

Supports skin and hair condition: In the tradition of Ayurveda, galangal is often used as a remedy to improve skin appearance. The results of modern studies have confirmed that it actually might be a good approach. The active ingredients contained in the essential oil of this plant stimulate the production of hyaluronic acid in the skin. Thus, they provide it with proper hydration, improve its density and reduce wrinkles, which is beneficial for its healthy look. They also reduce skin imperfections including acne and residual scarring. Galangal essential oil is also beneficial for hair. This is because it stimulates blood circulation in the scalp. In effect, it improves nourishment of the hair follicles and intensifies hair growth.
