Coriander essential oil | Coriandrum sativum

Traditional use: Coriander (Coriandrum sativum), also known as Cilantro or a Chinese parsley, is one of the most popular spices used in the cuisine of many cultures. In traditional medicine it has been around for millennia. What’s interesting, even the father of medicine – Hippocrates – used this herb in his practice, particularly to treat cramps and the ailments of the digestive system. It is actually the seeds of coriander that make such a wonderful ingredient popular in the kitchen but also in aromatherapy. They create a tasty spice and might be used to produce essential oil that has multiple applications in cosmetics and natural medicine. The oil makes a great composition with other citrus oils, such as jasmine, cipris, bitter orange, common sage or cinnamon. Besides that, coriander makes a nice aromatic addition to soaps or other lotions. It has a sweet herbal fragrance with a rose tree note, however, coriander is more expressive. This oil is very expressive yet pretty relaxing.

In natural therapy coriander essential oil exhibits immunostimulant properties. It supports natural defense systems in the fight against microbes which makes it a useful remedy during infections, particularly those that attack the upper respiratory tract. Coriander helps to reduce mucus but also has expectorant and diaphoretic effects. All of these properties are beneficial for the organism under pressure. Moreover, coriander oil is an antioxidant that facilitates the blood flow. Because of that, it supports a good condition of the skin and reduces unwanted skin changes such as acne. Natural therapy enthusiasts will certainly appreciate analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties of the oil.

Occurrence: Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) is an annual plant from the family of Apiaceae. It naturally occurs in the mediterranean area and in Western Asia where it usually grows on dry and grassy soil. The maximum height of coriander is about 60-70 cm. Coriander leaves are quite similar to the leaves of parsley, but they are slightly bigger. The flowers are light pink or white in color and grow in umbels. The flowering period of this herb occurs in June and July.

The essential oil available in our shop has been extracted from dried seeds of Coriandrum sativum herbs from French organic farms.

Biochemistry: Coriander oil contains many active substances, including: linalool, camphora, geranyl acetate, geraniol and sabinen. In smaller amounts there can be found: limonene, gamma-terpinene and alpha-pinene.

The oil available in our shop is produced with a method of steam distillation from the dried seeds of coriander (Coriandrum sativum). Thanks to that every drop is optimally condensed and has an aroma bouquet unique for this plant.

Fun fact: Coriander seeds are not seeds at all. They are actually fruits that can be used for culinary purposes, but the leaves are also commonly used as a spice.

How does Coriander essential oil | Coriandrum sativum work?

Improves mental energy: Coriander essential oil is known for its stimulating properties. The results of multiple clinical tests have shown that inhalation with preparations based on this oil can help to reduce stress levels and improve emotional state. Researchers have proven that the active ingredients it contains have a beneficial effect on reaction times, spatial memory as well as learning abilities. It is likely that this effect is the result of the way these compounds influence the dopaminergic system. This is because they regulate the expression of genes related to the production and release of dopamine, the expression of receptors for this neurotransmitter as well as its reuptake. In effect, dopamine levels in the brain increase, which contributes to the sensation of increased mental energy levels.

Supports well-being: Coriander essential oil influences the central nervous system, bringing a significant improvement of mood. Research indicates that the active compounds found in this oil increase the activity not only of dopamine, but also of serotonin and GABA. In fact, they increase the concentration of receptors for these brain chemicals and inhibit the breakdown of serotonin molecules that occur in synapses. During clinical tests, it has been shown that this oil used for inhalations or massage is able to alleviate the discomforts associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS), such as nervous tension, irritability and sleep problems, but also abdominal pain, headaches or breast pain. Coriander oil can therefore be helpful even in hard situations.

Supports body weight reduction: During one of the studies, it has been proven that a daily 15-minute inhalation with coriander essential oil, applied for 4 weeks, helped to reduce the participants’ body weight, waist circumference and fat mass. The topic of using this oil in weight loss still requires further research. However, the results of studies conducted with animal models are promising. Indeed, there are indications that it can reduce appetite and food intake. It also stimulates metabolism and shows a thermogenic effect, helping to efficiently use energy reserves stored in the form of body fat. In addition, it can increase the secretion of digestive enzymes. Thanks to that, it allows better utilization of smaller portions of food, making it easier to stay on a weight-reducing diet.

Regulates the immune system: Experts of natural medicine often recommend the use of coriander essential oil as a support in the fight against infections. The results of scientific studies suggest that such an approach has some merit. The active ingredients of this oil have been proven to show antibacterial and antiviral effects. They can be particularly effective against flu virus, herpes or the common cold, for the latter even with concentrations of less than 1%. Coriander oil also can support the body’s natural defense mechanisms. This is because it is able to increase the number of T lymphocytes that are necessary to neutralize pathogens, but simultaneously, it stimulates the production of antibodies. What is more, it may prevent the excessive development of inflammations since it inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, while increasing the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Hence, it acts as an immunomodulator, supporting proper functions of the immune system.
