Wintergreen essential oil | Gaultheria procumbens
Traditional use: Wintergreen for centuries has been used by various tribes living in North America. The Delaware tribe and the Mohicans prepared an infusion based on the plant’s leaves, treating it as a remedy for kidney problems. In the culture of the Great Lakes tribes, on the other hand, poultices made from wintergreen were said to relieve pain associated with joint inflammation. To this day, wintergreen extract is still used as a support for health ailments. The essential oil extracted from this plant has a unique aroma, which can be described as herbal with a distinct addition of mint. Its main active ingredient – methyl salicylate – exhibits soothing and analgesic effects. Therefore, it is traditionally used to relax muscle tension and relieve pain conditions of various origins. In addition, aromatherapy experts recommend the use of wintergreen oil as a support for the proper work of the immune system, as it exhibits antibacterial and antiviral effects. In addition, it helps to regulate the intensity of the immune response, preventing the excessive spread of inflammation. At the same time, it shows a warming effect and facilitates breathing during upper respiratory tract infections. Moreover, it aids proper digestion, stimulates blood and lymph circulation, but also supports the natural processes related to cleansing the body, neutralizing harmful substances, and regeneration.
Occurrence: Gaultheria procumbens, also known as Wintergreen, is an evergreen shrub in the heather family (Ericaceae). It is a creeping plant that grows up to 15 cm tall. It has elliptical, serrated leaves that are glossy on the top side. Its bell-shaped flowers, on the other hand, occur in clusters and usually have white or light pink color. The flowering period of this plant is in July and August.
Wintergreen naturally occurs in eastern North America – mainly in areas of Newfoundland and southeastern Manitoba. It is frost-tolerant and prefers semi-shaded, moist areas, both in coniferous forest areas (pine forests) and deciduous forests. It is often found as part of heathlands in oak-heath forests.
Biochemistry: Wintergreen essential oil contains a number of active compounds that are responsible for its unique aroma and properties. Of all the substances contained in this oil, the most significant are: methyl salicylate (about 90%) – it is responsible for mint-like fragrance as well as anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of this oil. In addition, compounds such as tuberolactone, Massoia lactone and cinnamyl alcohol can be found in the oil.
Fun fact: The name of this plant commemorates Jean François Gaultier – a botanist from Quebec. In 1749, he supported Swedish explorer Pehr Kalm on his travels in Quebec, and thus contributed to the discovery of many new plant species.
How does Wintergreen essential oil | Gaultheria procumbens work?
Immunomodulatory properties: Wintergreen essential oil is known for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Its effectiveness in this field has led scientists to study it as an alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). No less important is its antibacterial and antiviral activity. It makes this oil an excellent support in the fight against infections, especially those involving the respiratory tract. Rubbed into the skin on the chest or used in the form of an inhalation, it relieves the symptoms accompanying a cold or flu, including facilitating the removal of secretions lingering in the respiratory tract. With its soothing and warming aroma, it aids breathing comfort. It also strengthens the body’s natural defensive activity.
Supports recovery after training: A massage with wintergreen oil is perfect after a hard day or an intense workout. This is because it has a soothing effect on the mind and facilitates relaxation. Moreover, it shows warming and relaxing properties, helping to loosen tense joints and muscles. It stimulates blood and lymph circulation, thus increasing tissue nutrition and facilitating the removal of unnecessary metabolic products from the tissues. All this promotes post-workout recovery. In addition, wintergreen essential oil helps to improve physical fitness. This is because it increases respiratory capacity, which makes it easier to perform even very demanding exercises.
Body cleansing: The warming effect of wintergreen oil is important not only in terms of relaxation. This is because the active ingredients of this oil stimulate blood and lymph circulation. This increases the efficiency of natural processes related to cleansing tissues of harmful substances, such as unnecessary products of metabolism. This oil also stimulates urination. In this way, it helps to remove toxins, excess water and salt from the body. The same mechanism has a beneficial effect on the kidneys – it increases their filtration, which supports the prevention of kidney stones.
Improves overall vitality: Wintergreen essential oil has a comprehensive, positive effect on the entire body. Its relaxing properties extend not only to the skeletal muscles, but also to the smooth muscles of the respiratory, digestive and reproductive systems. As a result, it is sometimes used to relieve discomforts accompanying menstruation: abdominal pain, cramps, nausea or fatigue. The oil also supports digestion. This is because it regulates the secretion of digestive juices and suppresses excessive appetite. It also has an excellent effect on the skin. It helps to nourish it and increases its elasticity, giving it a healthy and radiant appearance. Besides that, it has a beneficial influence on hair and counteracts its greasiness. In turn, thanks to its antimicrobial properties, it effectively helps to fight dandruff.
