Tea tree essential oil | Melaleuca alternifolia

Traditional use: The tea tree has been known for centuries to indigenous Australians, who used its leaves to treat a variety of health ailments, especially skin infections, insect bites and respiratory problems. Nowadays, experts in the field of natural medicine are also exploring the potential of this plant in the support for well-being. The essential oil extracted from the leaves of the tea tree exhibits a number of health-promoting properties. First of all, it has an antibacterial and antiviral effect, thus reducing the development of upper respiratory tract infections. Moreover, it stimulates the immune system, which is why it is popular as a natural immune support during the autumn and winter. In aromatherapy, it is sometimes used to cleanse the body of toxins, as it benefits the condition of the liver and protects it from harmful factors. It also protects the skin from pathological changes thanks to its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to moisturize it properly and cleanses the pores. Moreover, it nourishes and strengthens the hair, thus comprehensively improving its appearance. At the same time, it is worth noting that tea tree oil promotes relaxation thanks to its refreshing, spicy aroma. Its effectiveness in this regard has even been confirmed in scientific studies, whose participants reported a better mood after using this oil.

Occurrence: Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) is an evergreen tree in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). The plant usually grows to about 7 meters in height. Its spreading branches are full of thin, oblong leaves. The flowers, on the other hand, turn snow-white in color and are gathered in small inflorescences. The flowering period of the tea tree is quite short and lasts from spring to early summer. This plant is widely used in herbal medicine. Its leaves are used as a raw material and the essential oil of this tree is obtained from them.

Tea tree is an endemic species – it is found only in Australia, which is also the country of origin for the oil available in our shop. It was discovered in the 18th century by British sailors, who used its leaves to prepare a tea-like infusion. This is where the common name of this plant came from. However, it should be noted that it is in no way related to Chinese tea (Camellia sinensis), the leaves of which are used to make “real” tea, the most popular drink in the world.

Biochemistry: Tea tree essential oil contains many active substances, the most important being terpinene-4-ol, gamma-terpinene, alpha-terpinene, alpha-terpineol, alpha-pinene, terpinolene and limonene, which is present in many citrus plants.

The oil available in our offer is obtained by steam distillation from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree. Thanks to that, each drop contains an optimal concentration of active ingredients and a unique bouquet of aromas unique to this plant.

Fun fact: The generic name of the tea tree – melaleuca – is a combination of two words from ancient Greek: melas, which means “black”, and leukos, meaning “white.” This is a reference to the tree’s appearance, as its white branches stand out against the dark trunk.

How does Tea tree essential oil | Melaleuca alternifolia work?

Provides support during infections: Tea tree leaves for centuries have been used in the systems of traditional medicine. Crushing them and inhaling their aromatic fumes was a common method to treat respiratory infections. Modern scientific research has confirmed that the components of the essential oil can reduce congestion of the mucous membranes and facilitate expectoration. In addition, the oil has strong antibacterial and antiviral effects. Thus, it provides valuable support for the immune system – especially during the period of increased infections.

Supports body cleansing: Scientific results have proven that the biologically active compounds present in tea tree oil have a positive effect on the entire body. This is because they inhibit the excessive production of reactive oxygen species by the cells, neutralizing these and other free radicals. Thus, they protect delicate cellular structures from damage and support their proper activity. They also have a beneficial effect on the liver – an organ that metabolizes toxins – as they help to maintain lipid homeostasis within it. In addition, tea tree oil intensifies the secretion of sweat, which helps the body get rid of unnecessary metabolic products and other harmful substances.

Supports stress relief: The energizing and slightly spicy scent of tea tree oil floating in the air helps to create a pleasant atmosphere, which makes it a great support for relaxation. This is not the only way the oil promotes well-being. Volunteers who participated in studies focused on the effectiveness of aromatherapy with this oil experienced a significant reduction in perceived stress and improved mood. In addition, their sleep became more efficient. Another feature of this oil that undoubtedly contributes to well-being is its potential in relieving muscle pain.

Improves skin and hair condition: The antimicrobial properties of tea tree oil are helpful not only for colds. The oil inhibits the growth of bacteria responsible for acne. It also helps to cleanse the sebaceous glands and prevents excessive dryness as well as flaking of the skin. Besides that, it reduces inflammation within the skin, which helps significantly in relieving many skin ailments. Tea tree oil increases blood flow within the scalp. The effect is better nourishment of the hair follicles, resulting in stronger hair and reduced hair loss.
