Shilajit extract 20:1 | Asphaltum punjabianum

Properties: “Elixir of life”, “wonder of nature”, “mountain balm” – these are only a few names among all that refer to Shilajit. Shrouded in legends, this mysterious substance is an incredible combination of vitamins, minerals and other natural compounds. For thousands of years Shilajit has been used in natural medicine as the panacea for various ailments. Its advantages were appreciated, for instance, in ancient Greece, Arab countries and Persia. However, Mumio had the greatest impact on Indian culture, specifically in Ayurvedic medicine. Shilajit is still one of the key elements of natural medicine and is commonly used in herbalism. Why exactly is this strange substance so popular?

Even in ancient times, it was observed that people who had consumed Mumio simply had more energy. When physically exhausted, they regained vitality quicker. That is the reason why Mumio was especially advised as a support for general health. For the inhabitants of India this compound became a basic component of a healthy diet. That shouldn’t be a surprise! Shilajit is literally a “bomb of minerals”. Thanks to scientific research we know that it contains lots of vitamins, minerals and other compounds which are essential for the body in order to function properly. Additionally, it helps to “cleanse” the organism of harmful substances by stimulating the activity of natural antioxidants. Shilajit has a beneficial impact on the body because it helps to stabilize the circadian cycle, it also improves the quality of sleep and increases resistance to stress.

It is worth remembering that Mumio affects the nervous system. Most of all, it supports the effectiveness of thinking and the ability to memorize information. It also enhances the activity of neurotransmitters, primarily GABA, which helps to be calm in difficult situations.

Ancient people valued Shilajit because it’s a great support for the immune system. With the Asphaltum punjabianum immune response to viruses and bacteria definitely occurs more rapidly. Besides this fact, Mumio helps to prevent the spread of inflammation. This is particularly important since inflammation can contribute to development of chronic diseases. These are the main reasons why people used Mumio and advised this substance as a remedy for many diseases and health conditions.

To sum it up – Shilajit is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals that improve physical fitness. It contains a number of substances which stimulate the nervous system functions and improve brain work. By consuming Mumio we can take care of both the body and the brain. Effectiveness of Shilajit has been proven by scientific research and also by many years of tradition and practice.

Occurrence: Shilajit | Mumio (Asphaltum punjabianum) is a mineral-organic substance with a thick, sticky consistency similar to pitch. Its color depends on the included components but usually it’s black or dark brown. Shilajit probably develops over centuries from the slow decomposition of plants induced by microorganisms. It mainly occurs in the Himalayas, but also in Pamir mountains, in the Altay and Caucasus. It can be found in caves and carvings in the form of  cave dripstones. According to Asian legends Shilajit had come into being from the tears of giants who lived in high mountains. Ancient Greeks considered it to be the clotted blood of Prometheus who, as legend says, was chained to the rock in Caucasus as a punishment for giving fire to humans. In the traditional Indian medicine (Ayurveda) Shilajit has been used for many years as the remedy for different conditions. It’s also considered to be the panacea which energizes and revitalizes the body.

Shilajit was first described in the 6th century BC in the medical treatise “Sushruta Samitha” written by Sushruta. This treatise is considered to be a foundational text of Ayurveda. Habitants of Nepal and Northern India use this substance in their diet up to this day. Shilajit was applied in ancient Greek medicine and in the Middle East. Even Aristotle recommended Mumio to his patients. Moreover, Persian doctor Avicenna, who wrote “The Canon of Medicine”, thought of it as an effective remedy for fractures, dislocations, swellings and migraines.

Biochemistry: Shilajit contains both organic (60-80%) as well as mineral compounds (around 28%). It owes its properties to organic compounds, mainly the fulvic acids which are the part of the soil humus. Exogenous amino acids (like methionine) and endogenous amino acids (like cysteine) are in the group of other, important Shilajit’s ingredients. Besides that, Mumio contains: humic acids and humins (also the part of the soil humus), triterpenes, phenolic lipids, dibenzo-alpha-pyrones, peptides, glucosides, polyphenols and vitamins (A, C, D and those from B group). Mineral complex is made up of around 80 easily assimilable minerals and includes macronutrients (for example: calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium), and additionally micronutrients (like: iron, copper, cobalt, selenium, zinc, molybdenum). Composition and color of Shilajit may differ depending on its origin. According to Ayurvedic medicine black Shilajit is the most valuable variant.

Fun fact: Shilajit is called through various names which have origins in different regions of the world. But the source remains the same – it occurs in the high mountains. The names refer to the place it comes from. Arabs call it “rock sweat”, for the inhabitants of Altai it’s “stone oil”, in Burma it is known as “blood of the mountains”, in India as “rock juice”, and in Bulgaria it is called “mountain honey”. “Shilajit” or “Mumio” are the most common names. First of them is derived from a Sanskrit word and means “conqueror of mountains, destroyer of weakness”. “Mumio” comes from Greek where this term means “protecting the body”.

How does Shilajit extract 20:1 | Asphaltum punjabianum work?

Improves physical performance: Experts of Indian medicine recommend using Shilajit in order to strengthen one’s vitality. The results of modern research have proven that it increases testosterone level. This “male hormone” is a natural, endogenous anabolic – it stimulates muscle growth. What was also indicated is that Shilajit effectively supports chronic fatigue treatment. This condition is accompanied by complete exhaustion, sleep disturbances or pain without a specific reason. Many scientists suspect that the main cause of this condition is exposure to chronic stress. Shilajit normalizes the activity of GABA – a neurotransmitter important for coping with difficult situations. It helps to regulate circadian cycle, makes regeneration of the body during sleep more effective and supports resistance to stress. All this contributes to significant improvement of physical condition.

Supports the nervous system: In the Ayurvedic tradition Shilajit is defined as “medha rasayana” –  an ingredient that is able to strengthen the mind. The results of scientific research indicate that it actually can improve memory and learning capability, especially in older people. This effect might be based on the fact that Shilajit affects mitochondria – specific cell organs responsible for energy production in all bodily cells, including neurons. The active compounds contained in this resin stimulate mitochondria to produce ATP which is a main carrier of energy that is essential in many important chemical reactions. This acceleration of neuronal metabolism is likely to improve intellectual efficiency. Moreover, Shilajit has a very rich composition which consists of compounds that provide neuroprotective properties – they protect neural cells from harmful factors. Research proves that fulvic acid found in Mumio is able to inhibit aggregation of tau protein – a compound that, in excessive amounts, might be a risk factor for neuronal disorders. And since Shilajit improves blood flow within the brain, it helps to deliver more oxygen and nutrients that are necessary for neurons to work efficiently.

Improves stress resilience: It has been proven that Shilajit is an effective support for people struggling with the chronic fatigue syndrome that is usually related to symptoms such as constant feeling of exhaustion, sleeping issues and feeling pain for no apparent reason. Scientists believe that this state is most likely caused by long-term exposure to stressful stimuli. Shilajit stabilizes the activity of GABA – a neurotransmitter that is crucial for stress management. This way, it helps to regulate the circadian rhythm, but also improves  efficiency of regeneration during sleep and supports stress resilience. What’s more, this Ayurvedic substance is also being tested as a support in addiction therapy. Previous research is promising because it indicates that Shilajit might reduce anxiety caused by substance withdrawal. At the same time, this traditional, Ajurvedic substance contains multiple vitamins, minerals and nutrients that can help a weakened organism to regain strength and maintain psychoemotional balance.

Improves general health: Since ancient times Mumijo has been used in order to fasten healing of bones. Modern research has proven that this substance is a rich source of calcium and phosphorus. Due to that, it stimulates mineralization of bones and helps to increase their durability. Shilajit also includes easily assimilable iron, crucial for production of red blood cells, which deliver oxygen to every cell of the body. What is more, it improves blood flow and infiltration of nutrients to the tissues. It helps to cleanse the organism of the excessive free radicals because it enhances production of glutathione – one of the strongest compounds which neutralizes these reactive particles. All of this makes Shilajit a good supplement supporting our general health.
