Rosemary essential oil | Rosmarinus officinalis
Traditional use: Salvia rosmarinus, commonly known as a rosemary, in natural medicine of Europe has been known since ancient times. In Greece and the Roman Empire, it was treated almost like a holy herb that symbolizes youth, regeneration and enormous strength. It was also believed that thyme can repel bad spirits and dangerous powers while maintaining good luck for the inhabitants. It also had an important role in cuisine as a spice but also as an aromatic addition to wines and other types of alcohol. Essential oil extracted from thyme leaves has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Since the oil destroys free oxygen radicals and stimulates blood flow, it also supports a healthy and young look of the skin. Some people use it as a prevention in the upper respiratory tract infections. Especially because it is an effective expectorant that helps to breathe clearly and soothes congestion in the nose and throat. In addition to that, active substances contained in the essential oil provide analgesic effects. Herbal medicine experts appreciate thyme because it reduces muscle tension and improves sleep quality. Thyme essential oil might be used as a massage oil but also in refreshing compositions for aromatherapy. The aroma of this herb is complex – it has an intensive, refreshing, slightly herbal smell with minty and woody notes.
Occurrence: Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) is an evergreen shrub belonging to the family of Lamiaceae. It reaches up to 1,5 meters (rarely 2 m). The leaves have a length of 4 cm and only 2-5 mm in width. The top part of the leaf is dark green while on the bottom the leaf is white or greyish. The blue or light pink flowers of rosemary are visited by bees that use thyme pollen to produce honey.
Rosemary grows mainly in the area of the Mediterranean Sea, but its crops can be found in many different countries. Wildly it occurs in: Italy, Greece, Portugal, Spain but also Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. The essential oil available in our stock is produced from the Spanish plants.
Biochemistry: Among many active substances contained in rosemary essential oil some deserve more attention. The most important compounds include: alpha-pinene, camphora, 1,8-cineole, camphene and borneol. There is also: beta-caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene.
The oil available in our shop is produced with a method of steam distillation from the aromatic leaves and flowers of rosemary. Thanks to that every drop is optimally condensed and has an aroma bouquet unique for this plant.
Aroma: Top note of high intensity and low durability.
Fun fact: The name of rosemary comes from Latin and is made of two words. “Ros” means “dew” or “humidity” while “marinus” is “sea”. Hence, it can be directly translated as “the dew of the sea”.
How does Rosemary essential oil | Rosmarinus officinalis work?

Improves mood and increases mental energy: For centuries, rosemary has been identified as a herb with a positive effect on cognitive performance. The results of scientific studies have proven that indeed, it can bring benefits to mental functioning. During clinical tests, the volunteers who were treated with inhalation of rosemary essential oil reported the feelings of being “refreshed”. This was reflected in their brainwave activity – scientists observed an increased intensity of frequencies associated with the willingness to be active. The oil has also been shown to lower the production of cortisol – a hormone whose elevated levels are responsible for many negative effects of stress. Therefore, rosemary essential oil improves mood while enhancing intellectual performance.

Supports liver functioning: Scientific findings have shown that rosemary essential oil can protect the liver from damage caused by exposure to toxins. Its active ingredients reduce oxidative stress that occurs in effect of these processes. This is because some of the compounds contained in the oil help to remove excess free radicals. They also activate natural defense mechanisms of this organ, such as the production of antioxidant enzymes – including the most potent one, glutathione. Besides that, they regulate the secretion of bile, which facilitates food digestion. Studies with animal models have revealed that they can protect the liver from cirrhosis with functional and structural changes associated with it. The liver is the most important organ that neutralizes harmful substances that access the body with food. Improving its condition and supporting its functioning, therefore, helps to cleanse the body and is actually important for good overall health.

Regulates and supports the immune system: Aromatherapy experts often recommend the use of rosemary essential oil to improve the symptoms of pains: head, muscle or joint aches, including those related to rheumatism or arthritis. And studies confirm the positive effects of the oil. During one of the tests, it was used for massage of people suffering from rheumatic changes. Just 3 sessions in a week lasting roughly 15 minutes resulted in a 50% reduction of the pain experienced by the volunteers. The analgesic properties of rosemary oil are most likely due to the anti-inflammatory influence of its active compounds. This is because they inhibit the migration of white blood cells into damaged tissues as well as the secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators. In addition to that, rosemary oil helps in the fight against pathogenic microorganisms. For example, it has been proven to inhibit the growth of the herpes virus. It also weakens bacterial cells and makes them more vulnerable to drugs. The oil helps to neutralize oral pathogens, and when added to toothpaste, it may reduce plaque.

Supports good hair and skin condition: Rosemary essential oil has an excellent effect on hair. Results of clinical studies have shown that it prevents hair loss and stimulates their growth. It has been found to be effective for such ailments as androgenetic alopecia (also known as male pattern baldness) and alopecia areata. Its effect is most likely due to the fact that it stimulates blood circulation within the skin. Thus, it improves the blood supply to the hair follicles, stimulating them to work efficiently. The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of rosemary oil are further beneficial to the skin. The oil has been proven to help with relieving ailments such as acne and eczema. It also prevents excessive oiliness of the skin. At the same time, it tones and moisturizes it, helping to ensure proper elasticity and a healthy appearance.

I Love it!! I use it on my hairs and skin. It smells just like heaven. The smell stays with me whole day, but the oil isn’t greasy, so everything looks fine.
