Phosphatidylserine 50% | AlphaSerine™

No reviews

Phosphatidylserine is naturally present in the human body, where it has many functions, including regulation of the nervous system. P-serine supplementation leads to a significant improvement of cognitive capacity, memory and attention – regardless of age. Moreover, it increases stress resilience and protects muscles from adverse consequences of prolonged exercise.

Phosphatidylserine 50% | AlphaSerine™

Properties: Phosphatidylserine has various properties. Among others and perhaps most importantly, it is  a building material of cellular membranes. That means it can influence the activity of cells throughout the body. Biochemistry of phosphatidylserine might be quite interesting, although the real deal is how this compound influences our well-being. Multiple scientific studies, including clinical trials, investigated the wide range of properties typical for this phospholipid. For instance, it turned out that supplementation of phosphatidylserine strengthens the functioning of working memory and concentration so much that the behavioral performance of study participants improved by 30%! Results of another study showed a significant improvement of brain cells metabolism, which is a marker of neuronal activity. This effect was particularly strong in elderly participants – those, who suffer from age-related decline in cognitive abilities. There are also studies that pinpoint the ability of phosphatidylserine to reduce the stress-induced secretion of cortisol. Some research demonstrated the protective effect of this phospholipid on muscle fibers. In such a way, phosphatidylserine can limit the adversarial effects of both psychological and physiological stressors. Research studies go on and might discover more beneficial effects of phosphatidylserine supplementation. However, the preliminary conclusion is clear – phosphatidylserine has universal effects that anyone can profit from.

Occurrence: Nowadays, phosphatidylserine is most often obtained from soy lecithin – a mixture of phospholipids and sterols from soy beans. Animal-based products, such as beef brain, Atlantic mackerel, Atlantic herring, eel, tuna, pork as well as poultry offal and chicken meat are its other major sources.

Biochemistry: Phosphatidylserine is an organic compound from the group of acidic phospholipids that builds cellular membranes of many organisms. In humans it makes up to 10% of all phospholipids. Its concentration is particularly high in the central nervous system structures: hippocampus, neocortex, and the olfactory bulb. The molecules of this compound are negatively charged, so they are able to influence the activity of enzymatic proteins related to cellular membranes. Thereby, they can activate intracellular signaling pathways.

Fun fact: Phosphatidylserine takes part in the process of blood clotting. When platelets (thrombocytes) floating in the blood vessels find damaged cells, they begin the healing process. Their activity causes phosphatidylserine to move from the inner to outer surface of thrombocytes. There, it binds clotting factors together, which accelerates the formation of the blood clot and recovery processes.

How does Phosphatidylserine 50% | AlphaSerine™ work?

Regulates the nervous system: It has been proven that regular supplementation of phosphatidylserine increases glucose metabolism in the central nervous system cells, which is a marker of their efficacy. Results of clinical trials have also demonstrated that phosphatidylserine taken regularly strengthens cognitive abilities, especially in elderly people who are at a higher risk of developing dementia. Importantly,  phosphatidylserine stimulates the activity of acetylcholine, which is crucial for quick and effective information processing.

Supports memory and attention: Multiple studies confirmed that supplementation of phosphatidylserine improves short-term memory and enhances information processing. In one of the studies young people who administered this compound achieved 10% more correct answers in the test, while their wrong answers rate dropped by 39%. This effect is likely due to the ability of phosphatidylserine to stimulate the activity of dopamine – a neurotransmitter responsible for working memory and concentration, as well as acetylcholine – a neurotransmitter that is crucial for focus and information acquisition. It is also the case that in animal models administration of phosphatidylserine increases the activity of acetylcholine by up to 45%.

Improves stress resilience: Stressors activate a functional network called a hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA). That way, signals coming from the brain stimulate the production of cortisol – the “stress hormone” that is responsible for unpleasant feelings related to physiological and psychological stress. Multiple research studies confirmed that phosphatidylserine influences the central nervous system and calms down the HPA axis, thereby decreasing cortisol secretion. Other results showed that this compound intensifies the presence of alpha waves in the brain, which indicates the state of relaxation. All in all, the supplementation of phosphatidylserine helps to increase stress resilience.

Improves physical performance: Phosphatidylserine causes beneficial effects not just in the nervous system but in the whole organism. Clinical trials run on healthy participants confirmed that this compound has a positive influence on physical performance. The results of those studies demonstrated that it limits the damage of muscle fibers caused by prolonged effort. Moreover, it decreases stress caused by intense workout, which is reflected in reduced levels of cortisol.
