Traditional use: The leaves of oregano (Origanum vulgare) are one of the most popular spices used in the national cuisine of different countries. It has a particularly strong connection with Italy and Greece. It is commonly added to pizza and other dishes of Mediterranean origin, e.g. pasta, soup, salad and fish. However, it is not only the leaves of oregano that deserve our attention. The essential oil obtained from the flowering tops of this herb has a long list of health benefits that will certainly satisfy every adept of herbalism. The aroma of oregano is like no other. It has an intensive, herbal touch with a sweet note.
In natural medicine, oregano oil is valued especially for its antiseptic properties. Many consider it the best essential oil that prevents fungal and bacterial infections. If used regularly, it strengthens the immune system, especially its ability to fight inflammation. Because of that, oregano oil might be even more effective in autumn and winter when we are attacked by different infections the most. This essential oil soothes the symptoms of a common cold by unblocking the respiratory tract. Women will definitely appreciate the fact that oregano helps to regulate the menstrual cycle and reduce the pains that occur in this period. What is more, oregano supports a good mood and slightly energizes providing a positive attitude. Because of the high amount of antioxidants contained in it, the oil destroys free oxygen radicals and prevents premature aging.
Occurrence: Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a small, wide perennial plant from the Lamiaceae family of herbs. It has serrated, oval and hair leaves placed on long petioles. The green parts of this herb are the main source of essential oil. However, the biggest amounts of the oil can be found in the leaves. The inflorescence of oregano usually has a light pink or purple color and contains many smaller flowers gathered in umbels. The fruits of oregano are small, brown and they grow in mericarps.
Biochemistry: Oregano essential oil contains many active substances that are responsible for its health benefits. Those compounds include: thymol, carvacrol and sesquiterpenes. There are also: ursolic acid, flavonoids, caffeic acid, terpenes and phytosterols.
The oil available in our shop is produced with a method of steam distillation from the green parts of oregano (Origanum vulgare). Thanks to that every drop is optimally condensed and has an aroma bouquet unique for this plant.
Fun fact: Oregano has been widely used by ancient Greeks. They believed that this aromatic spice had been sent by goddess Aphrodite to make humanity happy.
How does Oregano essential oil | Origanum vulgare work?

Improves mental energy level: Oregano essential oil is known for its stimulating effects. In one of scientific studies, volunteers were subjected to a 10-minute inhalation with the oil, followed by a series of tests examining cognitive abilities. It turned out that the group using oregano oil had a significantly higher reaction time, better information processing speed and a higher mental energy level than the control group. This effect could be explained by the influence of this oil on the central nervous system. It has been shown that its active compounds inhibit the breakdown of dopamine and norepinephrine molecules, increasing their density in synapses. These neurotransmitters are crucial for proper energy levels and motivation, but also the ability to focus, working memory, as well as positive attitude and self-confidence.

Supports the nervous system: Oregano essential oil is an excellent choice for the development and regeneration of the nervous system. Scientific results have proven that it increases the level of neurotrophins – proteins important for the growth and survival of neurons. It can stimulate neurogenesis (the process during which new nerve cells are created) and neuroplasticity (the ability of the brain to form new connections between them). Moreover, its active ingredients inhibit the breakdown of acetylcholine molecules. This brain chemical is responsible for efficient and clear thinking, the ability to focus attention, remember and recall relevant information. During clinical trials with Alzheimerās patients, it has been established that using oregano oil can improve cognitive functions such as memory and learning abilities.

Regulates the immune system: Oregano oil is often praised for its antiseptic properties. Research shows that the biologically active compounds found in this oil are effective against numerous microbes, including E.coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, as well as influenza and hepatitis C viruses or Candida type fungi. They also support natural defense mechanisms of the body by increasing the activity of T lymphocytes and NK cells, but also stimulating the production of antibodies. At the same time, they reduce the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, thus preventing tissue damage due to the uncontrolled spread of inflammation. They can also inhibit the production of IgE antibodies and mitigate allergic reactions. Researchers suggest that oregano oil may support the treatment of autoimmune disorders and other issues associated with excessive inflammation, but this topic requires further testing.

Improves hair and skin condition: The antibacterial and antifungal effects of oregano essential oil can be particularly helpful for skin problems. Studies indicate that it effectively supports the treatment of acne, psoriasis or dermatophytosis. It also helps to get rid of dandruff. And since it improves circulation in the blood vessels of the skin, it helps hair follicles to receive better nourishment and accelerates the growth of healthy and shiny hair. Besides that, it can protect the skin from UV radiation and oxidative stress, slowing down the aging process. The oil has also been shown to increase the production of collagen and elastin, which provides the skin with proper hydration and flexibility. In clinical trials conducted with women between the ages of 25 and 40, a regular use of oregano essential oil led to the improvement of skin moisture, its elasticity and softness.
