Biochemistry: Nefiracetam (DM-9384) is an organic chemical compound classified as a racetam. As all compounds in this group, its molecule contains a 2-pyrrolidone ring, a derivative of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). It is analogous to piracetam, however structurally it resembles aniracetam. This fat-soluble compound easily crosses the blood-brain barrier. Within the central nervous system it stimulates the activity of the main excitatory neurotransmitter – glutamate. Moreover, it increases the density of choline, a crucial substrate for the synthesis of acetylcholine – another excitatory neurotransmitter. Nefiracetam is the only racetam that exhibits high affinity to GABA-A receptors. It also contributes to the improvement of blood flow in the vessels supplying the brain with nutrients and oxygen. Last but not least, it prevents premature cell death within the nervous system.

Fun fact: Up to this day scientists discovered 17 compounds that belong to the group of racetams. Besides nefiracetam the group includes popular nootropic substances such as: aniracetam, oxiracetam or coluracetam. The other interesting examples are brivaracetam and omberacetam (commonly known as noopept).
