NAC | NeuroCysteine™

Properties: N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is an acetyl derivative of an amino acid L-cysteine that exhibits strong antioxidant properties. It is able to reduce the amount of free oxygen radicals thanks to the thiol group -SH that occurs in its molecule. Moreover, NAC acts as a precursor for glutathione which is one of the most powerful antioxidants produced in the human body. Because of that, N-acetylcysteine helps to neutralize reactive oxygen species protecting bodily cells from damage and degeneration. It is also a valuable support for the proper functioning of the liver that plays a key role in detoxification. Most metabolic reactions that lead to a breakdown and removal of harmful substances occur in the liver. It has been proven that NAC protects the liver and kidneys from the effects of different toxic compounds but also stimulates regeneration of the damaged cells. One of the topics that researchers explore is the effectiveness of this amino acid in addiction treatment. As it turns out, there are studies indicating that N-acetylcysteine might have some potential in nicotine dependence therapy. However, just like with many claims in science, we need more testing to establish if it’s truly effective or not. All in all, the preliminary reports seem promising.

In addition to that, NAC can be a comprehensive support for immunity as it is able to inhibit replication of viruses, particularly influenza virus that poses a serious threat every year during winter season. Symptoms of the flu and other upper respiratory tract infections include huge amounts of mucus that is stuffed in the throat, nose and sometimes even affects our lungs. Natural coughing reaction might provide some minor relief although usually it only gets more uncomfortable. NAC is known as an expectorant which basically means that it helps to break down mucus and clear the airways. And since it helps to neutralize free oxygen radicals, it significantly reinforces the immune system.

What is more, it is worth mentioning that N-acetylcysteine has many other health-promoting properties. It supports proper functioning, growth and regeneration of the cells that build bone tissue. At the same time, it helps to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis by lowering the level of homocysteine in blood plasma. But that’s not all! Research shows that NAC helps to decrease blood pressure and might even mitigate the risk of hypertension – mostly because it protects the heart from oxidative stress. In addition to that, it modulates the activity of key excitatory neurotransmitters, e.g. glutamate and dopamine, that are crucial for a good mood and motivation.

Ultimately, let’s focus on why NAC is a popular ingredient in beauty products. As we repeatedly mentioned, it is a great antioxidant which is actually of great importance for the skin cells. NAC protects them from free oxygen radicals making the skin look bright and healthy. Besides that, it can also reduce the negative impact of ultraviolet sun rays on the skin and regulate the amount of naturally secreted sebum. For this reason, it is used in care products for mature skin, acne-prone skin, sunbathing cosmetics, but also in moisturizing creams.

Occurrence: N-acetylcysteine is present in raw ingredients and food products. Its sources include: soybeans, broccoli, wheat germ, red pepper, garlic, poultry, yoghurt and egg yolks.

Biochemistry: N-acetylcysteine (NAC, acetylcysteine) is an organic chemical compound derived from the sulfuric amino acid cysteine (Cys). From the digestive tract – in the intestine – it is absorbed into the bloodstream. This water-soluble compound crosses the blood-brain barrier. It probably affects the activity of glutamate – one of the excitatory neurotransmitters. In the body it is converted into cysteine. As a carrier of this amino acid, it is a precursor of glutathione (GSH) – a natural antioxidant produced by the body that prevents damage caused by the reactive oxygen species (e.g. free radicals, peroxides) and toxins. NAC itself is also an antioxidant. It oxidizes directly, due to the presence of a free thiol group (-SH), and indirectly, by supporting the synthesis of glutathione. As a result of this action, it reduces the effects of oxidative stress (the state of imbalance between the amount of antioxidants and free radicals in the body). It also has anti-inflammatory properties which is directly related to its antioxidant effects. NAC not only effectively neutralizes, but also prevents the formation of reactive oxygen species responsible for the development of the inflammation process. In addition, it has a positive effect on the functioning of the liver and kidneys by reducing the adverse effects of various compounds, e.g. heavy metals, and by activating the processes of detoxification as well as regeneration in these organs.

Fun fact: NAC can be a support in the fight against acne. Acne is a condition that arises as a result of improper work of the sebaceous glands. One of its causes is excessive oxidative stress. Due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, NAC can be helpful in fighting acne. Study showed that a therapeutic treatment enriched with NAC contributed to the reduction of acne by as much as 50% and improved skin condition with a simultaneous increase in glutathione and reduction of inflammatory markers.

How does NAC | NeuroCysteine™ work?

Supports detoxification: NAC might be an effective support for natural detoxification processes that occur in the body. Scientific research shows that N-acetylcysteine is beneficial for the condition of the liver. The main role of this organ is to break down different compounds, including those that might be toxic. It has been shown that NAC reduces the harmful effects of some chemicals on the liver but also supports regeneration of this organ. Moreover, this acetylated form of cysteine protects the cells of kidneys that take part in removing waste products and extra fluids from the body. N-acetylcysteine might reduce the intensity of acute heavy metal poisoning. Studies with animal models indicate that NAC mitigates the toxicity of copper with a mild effect on arsenic. In numerous research papers NAC has been identified as a support for substance abuse therapies. During clinical testing, the volunteers who had taken this amino acid were more likely to resign from smoking or taking drugs.

Supports the immune system: N-acetylcysteine helps to protect the body against infections. The results of studies have shown that this compound inhibits the multiplication of some viruses, including the flu virus. During infection, natural airflow in the respiratory tract might be disrupted because of excess mucus that is produced in response to inflammation. Since NAC exhibits expectorant properties, it helps to clear air passages and breathe more comfortably. At the same time, this amino acid shows anti-inflammatory properties. Research suggests that N-acetylcysteine might inhibit the activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNFα and interleukins: (IL)-1β and IL-6. Because of that, it can alleviate some of the symptoms associated with infections. Clinical trials indicate that because of strong antioxidant effects NAC supports the proper functioning of the immune system. It facilitates the reduction of free oxygen radicals so the immune cells responsible for destroying pathogens do not need to deal with oxidative stress and can work more efficiently.

Supports a good mood: The results of numerous scientific studies have shown that N-acetylcysteine is effective in reducing the effects of stress. Volunteers participating in clinical trials found that taking NAC helps them to control nervous habits such as biting their nails or plucking their hair. This effect is likely related to the ability of NAC to regulate the activity of glutamate – one of the excitatory neurotransmitters. When its level in the central nervous system is too high, the result might be an increased irritability or mood disorders. NAC inhibits the release of glutamate into the synapse, thus preventing overstimulation of the central nervous system. The ability of NAC to increase dopamine activity is also important. This neurotransmitter is primarily secreted during the activation of the reward system in the brain and is responsible for feeling pleasure and satisfaction from one’s own actions.

Improves health condition: N-acetylcysteine has a positive influence on the entire body. It has been proven that it lowers the level of homocysteine - an amino acid that is formed during digestion of proteins and might increase the risk of developing atherosclerosis. At the same time, NAC helps to control blood pressure and prevents it from going too high. Besides that, this compound supports proper functioning of the skeletal system. It has been shown to improve bone growth, mineralization and regeneration. In the context of overall vitality, it is worth noting that N-acetylcysteine is a particularly strong antioxidant. It effectively removes free oxygen radicals that occur naturally as a byproduct of metabolic reactions but in excess can be harmful to cellular structures, including DNA and mitochondria. NAC is an important precursor to glutathione – a compound considered to be one of the strongest endogenous antioxidants. Thanks to that, NAC supports proper functioning of bodily cells and protects those cells from damage.
