Supports a good mood: Dopamine is a compound that has an important role in the reward system. The release of this neurotransmitter induces feelings of pleasure and joy. That is why balanced dopamine activity is crucial for well-being and a high level of motivation. N-acetyl-L-tyrosine is a precurosor of dopamine while St. John’s wort has the potential to reduce dopamine reuptake. Moreover, Ginkgo, St. John’s wort and Rhodiola prevent molecules of this compound from deactivating too quickly. Yet, the ingredients of our formula also affect other mechanisms that may bring an improvement of mood. Serotonin, commonly known as a “happiness hormone”, is another key neurotransmitter that regulates one’s mood. Ginkgo biloba sensitizes serotonin receptors, so when this compound gets attached to neurons, it can bring stronger effects. St. John’s wort and Rhodiola are inhibitors of MAO – they reduce serotonin breakdown, allowing the molecules of this neurotransmitter to remain active for a longer time. What is more, St. John’s wort inhibits the activity of the HPA axis. This axis is a functional system that consists of three main parts: the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and adrenal glands. When we’re experiencing a stressful situation, those structures get activated and produce significant amounts of cortisol. While cortisol is a necessary hormone that regulates metabolism and immune responses, it is also related to negative consequences of prolonged stress exposure. High levels of cortisol over a longer period of time might have a bad influence on the general condition of the body. When it comes to reducing the activity of the HPA axis, GABA is probably the most effective neurotransmitter. St. John’s wort improves the activity of its receptors, thus blocking cortisol release. Improves memory and attention: Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter that affects efficiency of intellectual performance. When its activity is balanced, it has a positive effect on major cognitive functions, including attention, working memory or logical reasoning. In the central nervous system, dopamine is produced from an amino acid tyrosine. N-acetyl-L-tyrosine is an acetylated derivative of this compound that gets absorbed more efficiently than the “original”, so it reaches the brain in greater amounts and can be used to produce dopamine. Rhodiola and St. John’s wort – as inhibitors of MAO and COMT – reduce the breakdown of this neurotransmitter so it can affect the nervous system for a longer time. However, an increased activity of dopamine is not the only factor that can influence cognitive performance. St. John’s wort and Ginkgo biloba are able to stimulate the activity of another important compound – glutamate. This neurotransmitter is particularly important for the process of long-term potentiation (LTP) that is fundamental for effective information acquisition. Ginkgo biloba increases the activity of acetylcholine, especially in the prefrontal cortex where most of the advanced mental processes occur. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter necessary for attention skills but it also has an important role in memory, particularly associative memory.
