Rehmania extract 20:1 | Rehmannia glutinosa

Properties: Rehmannia glutinosa is also known as a Chinese foxglove. Originally, it has been cultivated exclusively in China but nowadays it is commonly grown in many other Asian countries. The root of this plant has been used as a raw herbal material by Chinese doctors for centuries. In natural therapy it is especially appreciated for its multiple active compounds that benefit plenty of processes that occur in the organism.

To begin with, an important property of Chinese foxglove is its influence on women during menopause. It helps to regulate hormonal secretion and prevents obesity caused by hormonal swings. What is more, supplementation with Di Huang leads to stabilization of mood, which can be distorted due to changes in hormonal secretion. However, the effects of Rehmannia glutinosa on the nervous systems are much broader and do not only apply to women only. It is well known that foxglove’s extract successfully supports intellectual performance because it stimulates the activity of key neurotransmitters. That is why when we use supplements based on this plant we can improve the functioning of the brain, especially in terms of cognitive functions. This effect particularly concerns the ability to concentrate the attention and efficiently memorize information. And there is more! Another beneficial property of Di Huang is certainly its neuroprotective function. Active compounds found in foxglove help to keep the toxins away from fragile nerve cells. Thereby, neurons maintain their efficiency longer and the connections between them are firmer.

Moreover, research evidence implies that the root of Chinese foxglove can be used to support the immune system. The ancient Chinese herbalists were actually when they applied this plant to cure various ailments. It has anti-inflammatory properties and stimulates natural defense mechanisms of the organism. Rehmannia extract increases the production of leukocytes responsible for detection and elimination of infections.

Last but not least, we can use the extract of foxglove simply to improve our mood. Natural substances contained in this plant successfully support the activity of neurotransmitters crucial for maintaining psychological well-being and stabilizing mood swings. Thus, by supplementing products based on Rehmannia glutinosa, we might deal with stressful situations and mood depletions with better results.

Occurrence: Rehmannia glutinosa is a perennial plant from the Orobanchaceae family. It is an endemic species found in China. It also can be spotted on the Korean Peninsula and in Japan – perhaps due to travelers’ activity. In the wild, it grows on mountain slopes and trails located at an altitude of approx. 1100 m above sea level. The genus Rehmannia is named after the eminent Russian physician Joseph Rehmann. Whereas the species name, glutinosa, comes from the English word “glutinous”, meaning “sticky”. This in turn reflects the properties of its root, which is the main raw herbal material.

Rehmannia glutinosa grows up to 10-30 cm height. Its roots are 5-5.5 cm long, tuberous and fleshy, with a rhizome-like appearance. From them depart thin  adventitious roots. The stem is densely covered with glandular and non-glandular hairs. At its base there is a rosette of leaves with an oval or slightly elliptical blade and irregularly notched or serrated edges. The flowers are gathered in apical clusters. They consist of a chalice of up to 1.5 cm high and a crown of 3-4.5 cm, fused to five sepals, with a narrow tube-shaped crown, purple-red on the outside and yellow-purple on the inside. They resemble the flowers of foxglove, which is why Di Huang is sometimes referred to as “Chinese foxglove”. The fruits of this plant are ovoid-shaped and 1-1.5 cm long.

Rehmannia glutinosa has been known by Traditional Chinese Medicine specialists for centuries. They recommended predominantly as a remedy to nourish blood and yin, especially in the kidneys. Generally, this plant is used in therapy of disorders, which stem from “yin deficiency”: allergy, anaemia, constipation, eczema, diabetes, hypertension, inflammation of bones and joints, insomnia, and even cancers.

Biochemistry: Rehmannia glutinosa contains a plethora of biologically active compounds. The most important of them are: iridoid glycosides, including catalpol, geniposide, rehmannosides A, B, C and D, leonurine and dihydrocatalpol. Additionally, other secondary metabolites have also been identified and those are: phenethyl alcohol glycosides (echinacoside, salidroside, cistanosides), non-glycoside iridoids, catechin, phytosterols, flavonoids (hesperidin, quercetin, myricetin), mono- and polysaccharides, exogenous amino acids (lysine, histidine, arginine, threonine, valine, leucine, phenylalanine) and endogenous (aspartic acid, glutamic acid, serine, glycine, alanine, isoleucine, tyrosine), vitamin A, micronutrients (chromium, manganese, zinc, calcium).

Fun fact: Di Huang contains over 100 biologically active compounds! For this reason, it has been considered a medical plant for centuries. Interestingly, it is very efficient in supporting bone and joint diseases.

How does Rehmania extract 20:1 | Rehmannia glutinosa work?

Soothes the symptoms of menopause: In Traditional Chinese Medicine the root of Rehmannia has been used for centuries as a relief for so-called female issues, such as menstrual disturbances and menopause symptoms. Modern research also has investigated properties of this plant. Results show that the extract of its root limits the loss of bone mass, which comes from the decrease of estrogen level. Therefore, it is a precious addition to osteoporosis prophylaxis. Moreover, menopause is often associated with gaining extra pounds due to the changes of hormonal secretion. It has been proven that R. glutinosa prevents this unfavorable effect. Moreover, it helps to control the blood cholesterol level. Last but not least, Chinese foxglove also affects the central nervous system and regulates neurotransmitter secretion.

Improves brain functioning: Results of scientific studies have proven that Chinese foxglove prevents premature death of neurons in the central nervous system. Thereby, it protects the fragile nervous structures from adversarial effects of free radicals and some bacterial toxins. What is more, it has been demonstrated that active compounds found in this plant increase the activity of acetylcholine. This neurotransmitter is crucial for efficient information processing. It helps to quickly associate facts and increases the ability to connect them with previously acquired knowledge. The results of studies carried out with the use of animal models show that Rehmannia glutinosa extract has a positive effect on memory and learning ability.

Supports good mood: Dopamine and serotonin are neurotransmitters classified as monoamines. They are crucial for proper functioning of the nervous system. Dopamine is secreted during stimulation of the reward system in the brain. It is responsible for optimal energy and motivation levels. Serotonin is often dubbed the “happiness hormone”. Its main task is to maintain the positive mood and feeling of inner comfort. Research evidence shows that Rehmannia glutinosa increases the activity of both these neurotransmitters. Moreover, it limits the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA). This axis is stimulated by the presence of stressful stimuli, which in turn lead to an increased production of cortisol – the stress hormone. In this way, the foxglove extract helps to maintain a good mood even when we are facing challenging situations.

Regulates the functioning of the immune system: Rehmannia glutinosa has immunomodulatory properties. Research studies have shown that it improves the non-specific immune response, which is a quick and direct line of defense against pathogens. What is more, it stimulates the activity of lymphocytes B and T  – white blood cells responsible for detection and elimination of specific bacteria and viruses. Simultaneously, it prevents the overspread of inflammation, which could harm important cellular structures. There are also reports of its soothing impact on allergy syndromes, but those reports require further confirmation.
