Cistanche tubulosa, also known as the “desert ginseng”, is a strong adaptogen used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It supports the natural production of testosterone improving sexual performance and muscle growth. Cistanche increases the level of hemoglobin in the blood which results in better oxygenation of muscles. What’s more, it also supports the immune system in the fight against infections.

Desert ginseng extract 100:1 | Cistanche tubulosa

Properties: Plants with strong adaptogenic properties are usually compared to the most famous representative of this group – ginseng. Hence the colloquial name of Cistanche tubulosa – “desert ginseng”. The first mentions of its usage come from roughly 3,000 years ago. It was believed then that thanks to its properties one could expect improved potency and, in addition, a very long life. As it turns out, there is some truth in this belief…

Aging is a very complex process, but it is based on the shortening of each cell’s DNA strands during cell division. Telomeres, the “ends” of chromosomes that ensure proper replication, are getting shorter and shorter. Modern scientific research proves that the active compounds contained in C.tubulosa significantly increase the activity of telomerase – an enzyme that improves the quality of telomeres, and thus slows down the aging process of each cell. So if our cells age more slowly…well, the conclusion is pretty obvious. What’s more, the polysaccharides present in the desert ginseng extract have a positive effect on the intestinal microflora, while a high concentration of echinacoside (known from echinacea) supports the body in the fight against pathogens. If you are to live long, try to stay in good health…

But do not forget that Cistanche is primarily a very “manly” adaptogen. It activates a series of natural processes that increase the natural production of testosterone. It also directly influences sexual performance, increasing the amount of blood flowing into the penis, which makes it much easier to achieve and maintain a full erection. Its properties will also be useful during exercise in the gym. The active compounds contained in C.tubulosa increase the amount of hemoglobin in the blood, which results in increased endurance, because the muscles are supplied with more oxygen. Besides that, the extract from Cistanche prevents excessive production of lactic acid, which might get stored deposits that cause soreness. It turns out that the Chinese sages were right. Even though the longest telomeres will not provide a hundred years of life, a fit body and appropriate libido will make the next several dozen much more pleasant.

Occurrence: Cistanche tubulosa is a parasitic plant that belongs to the broomrapes family (Orobanchaceae). It occurs naturally in West Asia and North Africa, where it can be found in deserts and semi-deserts. Desert ginseng creates extensive root systems from which aboveground shoots grow. Typically, those plants do not have leaves but they do have large flowers gathered in a cluster 20-50 cm high. This makes the blooming C. tubulosa similar to the hyacinth, which explains its colloquial name – “desert hyacinth”.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), C. tubulosa has been used for thousands of years mainly as a product that can help the body to adapt to harsh environmental conditions. It was also used as an aphrodisiac. Its description can be found in the famous Chinese medicine book “Shennong bencao”, dating from the Zhou dynasty (11th century BC). Its author, Shennong (Divine Farmer), listed the herb Cistanche, called “Rou Cong Rong”, among the middle-class herbs. The Chinese consider this plant an excellent tonic ensuring a long life. The Hotan region could serve as proof of this. Among the local population, for whom “desert ginseng” is a regular part of their diet, there is an extremely high percentage of people living over 100 years.

Biochemistry: The substances that Cistanche tubulosa owes its properties to are mainly phenylethanoid glycosides: echinacoside (also found in echinacea) and acteoside. The last one is chemically similar to resveratrol (found in Knotweed, Polygonum cuspidatum), but exhibits fifteen times higher activity. Apart from them, the plant also contains: cistanosides, tubulosides, icariin and essential oil. This oil contains alkanes, aldehydes, terpenoids, phenylethanoids and heterocyclic compounds.

Fun fact: The biblical plant researchers Jean and Solange Maillat believe that the plant Cistanche tubulosa is hidden under the biblical term “broom bush roots”. According to them, it is mentioned in the quotation from the Book of Job (30:4): “In the brush they gathered salt herbs, and their food was the root of the broom bush”. The broom bush root (Genista) itself is inedible, but the Cistanche tubulosa parasitizing on the roots of the broom bush is edible. Based on that quotation J. Maillat and S. Maillat conclude that C. tubulosa is a biblical plant.

How does Desert ginseng extract 100:1 | Cistanche tubulosa work?

Improves potency: Desert ginseng has traditionally been used by men who wanted to improve potency. The results of scientific research have confirmed that it is effective. Cistanche contains active compounds that intensify the production of testosterone. The most important one is echinacoside. It affects the hypothalamus and stimulates the hormonal cascade that naturally produces this male hormone. The same compound helps to dilate blood vessels and facilitate the flow of blood into the cavernous bodies of the penis. It has been proven that taking Cistanche extract accelerates achieving an erection and prolongs its duration. It also has a positive effect on fertility. The results of scientific research show that this plant increases the number of sperm cells and also increases the percentage of proper reproductive cells.

Improves physical performance: As an adaptogenic plant, Cistanche tubulosa has a beneficial effect on muscle strength. It has been shown to prevent damage to the muscle fibers during exercise. Due to the fact that it reduces the amount of lactic acid deposited in muscles, it prevents painful soreness. By increasing the level of hemoglobin, it allows more oxygen to be delivered to the muscle cells. It has also been proven that the active compounds contained in it increase the activity of dopamine. This neurotransmitter is crucial for energy and motivation to act. Therefore, desert ginseng – supporting this sphere of neural activity – makes it easier to perform even a difficult and demanding training.

Supports the immune system: One of the most important active compounds in desert ginseng is echinacoside. The results of numerous scientific studies have shown that to some extent it inhibits the growth of bacteria and viruses. Thus, it supports the immune system in the fight against pathogenic microorganisms. It has also been shown that the polysaccharides found in Cistanche are beneficial to the health of the body. Taken orally, they stimulate the growth of beneficial microorganisms that are part of the intestinal microbiota. Its correct composition is very important not only for proper digestion, but also for the proper functioning of the immune system.

Supports cognitive efficiency: It has been proven that desert ginseng extract has a beneficial influence on the nervous system. This herb contains many active substances including glycosides that stimulate important processes – neurogenesis and neuroplasticity – leading to significant increase in neural cell quantity. There are studies that prove Cistanche tubulosa to be an effective support for people with memory issues. The active compounds found in this herb protect the neurons from harmful compounds, e.g. beta-amyloid. Besides that, desert ginseng helps to preserve neurons that produce dopamine – one of the key neurotransmitters that affects attention and motivation levels. All these effects combined make C. tubulosa an effective support for the brain.
