Bupleurum extract 20:1 | Bupleurum chinense

Properties: The ancient Chinese developed one of the most complex systems of natural medicine. They described plenty of plants and natural substances that may be applied in order to support human health. Their medical knowledge was closely linked with the Chinese life philosophy and beliefs about spirituality. For this reason, they often evaluated the impact of a particular plant both on the physical and mental aspect of the person. Bupleurum chinense is one of the most important plants in traditional Chinese medicine, mainly because it provides comprehensive support for the organism. The ancient Chinese believed that Bupleurum is the greatest support for the qi energy of the liver, and rightly so! The liver is mentioned here not without a reason.

This is because B. chinense is a plant that exhibits hepatoprotective properties and that fact was supported by the results of many scientific studies. It means no more nor less that it helps to keep the liver in good condition. It protects liver cells against damage caused by harmful factors, especially against toxins. Why is it so significant? We need to remember that the liver is the main organ that cleanses the body. It is involved in the process of neutralizing chemical compounds that could negatively influence our health. That is the reason why its proper functioning is of crucial importance in the context of longevity and the prevention of many serious medical conditions. So, by using the extract from Bupleurum chinense we will certainly contribute to the better health of the liver.

Interestingly enough, B.chinense seems to be equally effective as the support for the immune system. It was established that active substances found in this plant support natural defense mechanisms that are activated when pathogens attack our body. B.chinense strengthens immunity, mainly via the increase in the production of white blood cells that are responsible for detection as well as neutralization of infections. Besides, it is good to know that active compounds found in Bupleurum chinense can directly fight the bacteria and viruses.

Moreover, B.chinense has a beneficial effect on our mind. It stimulates the activity of neurotransmitters that are responsible for a good mood. In addition, it makes it easier to relax and therefore prevents mood swings. That is the reason why plants belonging to this species were traditionally used to support the treatment of depression or recommended for women who struggled with the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

All these properties indicate that Bupleurum chinense was rightly considered by the ancient Chinese (and also the contemporary) to be an extremely important plant that has a beneficial effect on the human body. It is worth using it, primarily to take care of the health of the liver and to protect the body against pathogens.

Occurrence: Bupleurum chinense is a plant of the family Apiaceae. It comes from China, Korea and Japan and it is cultivated in these areas. In the natural habitat it prefers river banks and mountain slopes covered by grass but it also grows near the roads. It reaches the height of  50-85 cm. The stem is upright, clump and branched at the top. The leaves are positioned alternately. Leaf blades, 4-7 cm in length and slightly wider than 0,5 cm, are lance-shaped and have a peaked top. Bright yellow flowers bloom at the top of the stem from July to September and they are grouped in umbels. Small, longitudinal fruits ripen from August to September. The cone-shaped root is grey and brown in color and reaches a length from 6 to 20 cm.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine the root of Bupleurum chinense is used as the remedy for many conditions like fever, diarrhea, nausea, flatulence, indigestion, vomiting and breathlessness. It is also recommended for menstrual disorders, malaria or inflammation. According to ancient literature sources, it is able to “regulate internal and external metabolism, disperse the bad heat from the surface, soothe the liver and promote yang and qi”.

Biochemistry: The root of Bupleurum chinense is used as the herbal raw material. In a wealth of active compounds that are present in this root we can find: saikosaponins (triterpene saponins), polyacetylenes, flavonoids (eugenin, saikochromone, saikochromoside, saikoflavonoside), polysaccharides (including bupleuran), lignans, sterols, fatty acids and essential oils.

Fun fact: Plant genus Bupleurum contains almost 200 species that are hard to distinguish. Most of them occur in Asia but they can also be found on other continents like cooler regions of North America or in Europe where we can find 39 species.

How does Bupleurum extract 20:1 | Bupleurum chinense work?

Helps to stop drinking alcohol: In the tradition of Chinese natural medicine the leaves of Bupleurum have been used in order to reduce the impact of excessive alcohol consumption. However, the root of this plant has quite an opposite effect on the body. It contains isoflavonoids that inhibit the activity of enzymes that take part in the metabolism of alcohol. It has also been proven that they lower the activity of the brain reward system after substance intake. At the same time, they protect the liver from the harmful impact of toxins, including alcohol. Thus, the root of Bupleurum makes alcohol consumption less pleasurable. It is an effective mechanism that deters from substance abuse and helps to stay sober. Besides that, kudzu inhibits the enzymatic breakdown of serotonin and dopamine which has a positive influence on a good mood. That way, it minimizes the need to improve mood by drinking.

Reduces menopause symptoms: During menopause there are many changes that occur in the female body but most of them are related to unstable levels of hormones, e.g. estrogen. One of the symptoms that affect about half of the ladies in this stage of life is a significant mood deterioration. Scientific studies prove that active compounds contained in Bupleurum actually have an effect similar to estrogen which helps to regulate hormonal activity. There is also evidence that they lower frequency and intensity of heat waves and other symptoms typical for menopause. Importantly, they influence the activity of neurotransmitters that are crucial in terms of positive attitude. They regulate the receptors of serotonin, the so-called “happiness hormone”. When regularly taken, Bupleurum increases activity of GABA – the main inhibitory neurotransmitter that is responsible for stress resilience. All these effects help to maintain a good mood.

Protects the nervous system: The results of numerous studies show that the active compounds present in kudzu have a beneficial effect on the condition and functioning of the brain. It has been proven that these compounds help to regulate the activity of major neurotransmitters, including GABA, acetylcholine, dopamine, serotonin and glutamate. They stimulate secretion of the neurotrophic factors that are needed for important brain processes such as neurogenesis, neuroplasticity and neuronal regeneration. And since they improve blood flow in the arteries that supply blood to the brain, they provide more oxygen and nutrients to every single neuron. Keep in mind that kudzu is a great antioxidant and anti-inflammation herb that reduces oxidative stress and uncontrolled spread of inflammation in the brain. It has been proven that kudzu exhibits neuroprotective properties that might prevent degeneration of the nervous system and help to keep the whole nervous system in good condition.

Improves general condition of the body: The root of kudzu helps to keep the blood vessels in good condition. It prevents excessive accumulation of cholesterol, especially the LDL fractions that is considered a “bad” type of cholesterol. The active compounds found in this herb are actually strong antioxidants. Hence, they reduce cholesterol oxidation and prevent it from building up on blood vessel walls. They also protect fragile cellular structures such as the DNA and mitochondria that might be negatively affected by free oxygen radicals. Bupleurum is also investigated in terms of neurodegenerative diseases prevention due to its antioxidant activity. By reducing oxidative stress, the herb helps to protect neurons from damage. Moreover, Bupleurum chinense regulates the functioning of the immune system. It has been proven that it increases the number of white blood cells that activate main defense mechanisms in a case of infection. Besides that, active compounds of Bupleurum reduce inflammation that might be harmful for bodily tissues. All these effects make kudzu a great support for overall vitality.
