Berberine extract 98% | Phellodendron chinense

Properties: Properties of many plants that contain berberine have been discovered a long time ago. Due to its bright yellow color it was often used in order to paint fabric, skin, and wood. However, in the age of artificial pigments, its pro-health features are far more interesting. In the ancient times the sources of berberine have found many applications – they were used to heal the gastrointestinal tract, purify the organism, and support the immune system. Today, science has uncovered the reason why these traditional therapies actually worked.

The liver plays a crucial role in maintaining optimal health of the organism. Not only does berberine protect this important organ from damages (including these caused by excessive alcohol consumption) but it also improves functioning of the liver. For instance, berberine increases the liver’s sensitivity to cholesterol, thereby decreasing the amount of cholesterol in the organism. Moreover, the supplementation of berberine increments the glucose absorption from the bloodstream, which results in lower blood glucose level. Both effects have been proven in clinical trials.

The effectiveness of berberine supplementation as a slimming aid has also been verified. As it turns out, this compound inhibits fat storage and reduces appetite. Therefore, it is an excellent addition to the diet regime and can significantly improve its effectiveness – even in people with metabolic disorders. The length of this text makes it impossible to describe all the benefits of berberine supplementation, but the most important features include: antimicrobial effects, supporting learning processes by activating the LTP phenomenon and the ability to… support the immune system. Occurrence: Berberine is a bioactive compound found mainly in the plants from the Berberis family, such as common barberry (Berberis vulgaris). The other sources are: Chinese cork (Phellodendron chinense), goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), Chinese goldthread (Coptis chinensis), and Arcangelisia flava.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and traditional Indian medicine (Ayurveda) have been using berberine for millennia. They prescribed the common barberry plant to support the gastrointestinal tract and the liver, soothe any skin ailments, improve the immunity, and cleanse the organism from bacteria, fungi, and viruses. This plant was first mentioned in the book “Shen Nong Beng Tsao” written by Shennong, a legendary Chinese patron of agriculture and medicine. It was also used in ancient Egypt, where it was supposed to provide protection against the plague.

Biochemistry: The Chinese cork plant owes its properties to berberine found in its root. From the chemical perspective, berberine is an isoquinoline alkaloid of plant origin. It exists in the form of a quaternary ammonium salt, which allows creating complexes with other compounds. Thanks to that, its absorbability may be improved. Berberine alone is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Its bioavailability is quite low – less than 5%. When administered orally, it is metabolized to four biologically active metabolites. It can cross the blood-brain barrier but it depends on the dosage and time. Berberine supports the immune system due to its antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-parasitic properties. Importantly, it regulates the blood level of cholesterol and glucose.

Fun fact: Berberine is a fluorescent compound. In the UV light it emits very bright, yellow-green colored light. This property is often used in histology (the science of tissues) to stain heparin – a natural factor that prevents blood from clotting in the blood vessels.

How does Berberine extract 98% | Phellodendron chinense work?

Supports the liver and regulates the level of cholesterol: Research evidence proves that berberine supports the health of the liver. It protects this organ from infections and adversarial effects of some toxins (including ethyl alcohol), as well as from fibrosis. Furthermore, it upregulates the activity of hepatic LDL receptors, i.e. the low molecular weight fraction of cholesterol. This mechanism combined with berberine’s ability to inhibit the synthesis of lipids leads to a decrease of blood cholesterol level. Clinical trials confirmed the effectiveness of berberine in that regard. Dietary supplements that contained berberine significantly reduced the levels of triglycerides and cholesterol (especially the LDL). On top of that, their administration helped to decrease the blood glucose level. It is proven that berberine helps to increase the number of insulin receptors on the cell surface. Therefore the cells become more sensitive to glucose and are more efficient in its uptake.

Helps to stay fit: It has been proven that regular berberine supplementation promotes weight loss. This compound is especially efficient in the case when losing weight might be impaired due to metabolic disorders. Clinical trials have shown that berberine inhibits the production of fat tissue and reduces the amount of leptin – a hormone responsible for the sensation of hunger. In addition to that, this compound regulates glucose levels in the blood. It has been proven that berberine increases the density of insulin receptors on the cell surface. In effect, the cells become more sensitive to this hormone and absorb glucose molecules more efficiently. All in all, berberine intake leads to a reduction of body mass and normalization of blood cholesterol as well as triglycerides levels.

Supports cognitive performance: Research conducted with animal models proves that berberine stimulates the phenomenon of long term potentiation (LTP) in hippocampal neurons. Hippocampus is a crucial brain structure that enables formation of long-term memories, whereas LTP creates new and strengthens existing neural connections. Therefore, enhancement of LTP in the hippocampus directly translates to improvement of information and skills acquisition. What is more, berberine increases the activity of acetylcholine – a neurotransmitter essential for concentration and memory. Taken together, these properties make berberine a great support for the main functions of the brain.

Supports the immune system: Berberine can act as an immunomodulator – it regulates the intensity of the immune reactions preventing chronic inflammation. Research indicates that this alkaloid inhibits the Th1 and Th17 cells whose abnormal activity has been connected to autoimmune disorders. Moreover, it has been proven that berberine modulates Treg and dendritic cells, therefore indirectly decreasing Th-cell mediated inflammation. Besides that, berberine has been found to positively affect gut microbiota that is crucial for the proper immune response. In one of the studies berberine intake reduced the population of several bacteria species that cause intestine disorders. In other studies it has been proven that berberine helps to protect intestine mucosal barrier that blocks pathogens. All those properties and mechanisms make this plant-derived alkaloid an effective aid for the proper functioning of the immune system.
