Properties: “Good medicine is bitter for the mouth” – claims a Japanese proverb. If we were to take this for granted, Andrographis should be treated as a panacea. After all, the name “bitter king” cannot be earned for no reason. It is also the case that Andrographis has a wide spectrum of beneficial effects on the organism. Could it be that this “bitterness” scale is accurate? Let’s take a look.  

The impact of Andrographis herb on the immune system has been carefully investigated. Multiple results unanimously confirm that its traditional application as a remedy for all kinds of infections is actually accurate. It is proven that this herb not only has antimicrobial properties but also enhances the immune system response. For instance, it increases the number of antibodies and limits inflammation. Thereby, it can often help to defeat an infection before it spreads. 

Traditionally, Andrographis has been used to treat disorders of the digestive system. These effects were also verified by modern research findings. Compounds inherent to this herb seem to have protective and regulatory effects on the functioning of the digestive system. Occurrence: Andrographis paniculata is an annual plant that belongs to the Acanthaceae family. The plant has little, purple flowers clustered into leafy panicles situated on top of its branches and fruits that resemble berries. It grows best in shady, moisty areas where it can reach up to 110 cm. In the wild it can be found in tropical Asian countries: India, Thailand, Sri Lanka. Traditional medicine systems of the Far East: Indian Ayurveda, Persian Umami, and Chinese medicine employ Andrographis as a remedy for various ailments of the respiratory and digestive systems. This herb is also used to relieve viral infections, cold, indigestion, and to strengthen the immune system. It diminishes pain and has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.

Biochemistry: Andrographis beneficial effects are mostly mediated by andrographolides, neoangapholids, and their derivatives found in the overground part of the plant. In terms of chemistry, these compounds belong to diterpenes. Apart from them, this herb also contains flavonoids, phytosterols, saponins, and tannins.

Fun fact: Andrographis is one of the most bitter herbs. That is why in India it goes by the name of “Maha-tikta”, which literally means “bitter king”. Similarly, in Malesia this herb is referred to as “hempedu bumi”, meaning “the Earth’s bile” in order to highlight its unique bitterness.
